The Loyalty Tattoo is the inscription on Yue Fei’s back that gives visible form to his commitment to serve his country. Its meaning comes from words borne on the body rather than from a weapon or miraculous ability.
Chapter 22 of The Story of Yue Fei makes his mother inscribe jingzhong baoguo, wholehearted loyalty in service of the country, after he rejects a rebel’s invitation. The History of Song, volume 365, instead records jinzhong baoguo on his back during interrogation; that passage does not identify his mother as the tattooist.
The literary scene and the historical wording should remain distinguishable. Together they explain why an otherwise concealed inscription became such a memorable emblem of resolve, family teaching, and the contrast between loyal service and accusation.
