Luan Tingyu

栾廷玉

Luan Tingyu is the martial instructor and strongest field commander of Zhu Family Village during Liangshan’s three assaults in Water Margin. He is the senior school brother of Sun Li and has trained the village forces to use roads, hidden positions, and coordinated traps. Mounted with a spear and carrying a flying hammer, he combines personal skill with knowledge of the ground.

When the Liangshan army attacks, Luan Tingyu avoids a simple contest of strength. He strikes Oupeng with the flying hammer, then fights Qin Ming for twenty bouts. Pretending to retreat, he draws Qin Ming into tall grass where concealed ropes overturn horse and rider; Deng Fei rushes to help and is caught by hooks. The captures show how Luan’s defense joins weapon skill to prepared ambushes.

Liangshan finally uses his relationship with Sun Li against him. Sun Li arrives under government colors with family, baggage, and soldiers, claiming a transfer to nearby service. Because the two learned martial arts from the same teacher, Luan personally welcomes him and persuades the Zhu household to trust the visitors. Sun Li’s party then attacks from inside while Song Jiang assaults the walls. The village falls, and the main narrative gives Luan no clear individual death scene, preserving uncertainty amid the collapse he had worked to prevent.
