Pang Tong

庞统

Pang Tong, courtesy name Shiyuan and commonly known by the sobriquet Young Phoenix, is an important strategist in Liu Bei’s camp in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Within the intellectual world surrounding Jing Province, his reputation is often placed alongside that of Zhuge Liang.

Pang Tong has connections with figures in Eastern Wu before eventually entering Liu Bei’s service. Liu Bei initially fails to make full use of his abilities, but after recognizing Pang Tong’s talent he brings him into the central group of advisers.

When Liu Bei prepares to enter Yi Province, Pang Tong becomes one of the important planners of the campaign. He argues that Liu Bei should seize the opportunity to establish a secure territorial base and proposes different strategies for taking control of the region.

During the campaign in Yi Province, Pang Tong accompanies the army and is eventually killed by arrows near the place remembered as Fallen Phoenix Slope. His death deprives Liu Bei of a major strategist and contributes to the further involvement of Zhuge Liang and others in the western campaign.

Pang Tong is not primarily a martial figure, but he is an important Person Subject connecting Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and the strategic struggle for Yi Province.
