Sai Tai Sui

赛太岁

Sai Tai Sui is the demon lord of Qilin Mountain’s Xiezhi Cave in Journey to the West. Three years before the pilgrims reach Zhuzi Kingdom, he abducts the king’s Golden Saint Palace Lady and carries her to his cave. Yet possession does not bring him what he wants. Ziyang Zhenren secretly gives the queen a protective garment covered in unseen thorns, so the demon cannot approach her without pain. Her captivity becomes a long contest of endurance while the king sickens from grief.

Sai Tai Sui’s power is concentrated in the Purple-Gold Bells. Their successive sounds release consuming fire, choking smoke, and storms of yellow sand, forcing Sun Wukong back whenever he tries a direct attack. Wukong therefore enters the cave in disguise, gains the queen’s cooperation, and tricks the demon with false bells while removing the true set. Once the weapon changes hands, the balance of the episode reverses: the same terror that guarded the cave can now be turned against its owner.

Guanyin arrives before Wukong can finish the demon and reveals that Sai Tai Sui is her golden-haired hou, escaped from celestial custody. She reclaims the beast and its bells, while Wukong brings the queen safely home. Sai Tai Sui is formidable because he combines royal abduction with a treasure strong enough to deny even Wukong an easy victory. His failure comes not from weakness in battle, but from desire, carelessness, and an opponent willing to win through disguise and deception.
