The Single Rigid Whip is a characteristic weapon of Yuchi Gong, also known as Yuchi Jingde, in the Sui-Tang heroic tradition. Whip here means a rigid Chinese striking weapon, rather than a flexible leather lash. Its single use is central to the identity and distinguishes it from Huyan Zhuo’s Twin Whips.
Chapter 56 of Sui-Tang Romance contrasts Jingde’s single whip with Qin Shubao’s paired jian in a test of striking stone. Chapter 37 of the Tales of the Prince of Qin of the Great Tang also connects the single whip with his reputation for rescuing his lord.
The weapon consequently carries meaning beyond its practical use. It recalls Yuchi Gong’s strength, martial skill, and protective role without requiring an additional supernatural power of its own.
