Tang Long, the “Golden-Money Spotted Leopard,” is a blacksmith whose craft changes a military crisis in Water Margin. Li Kui meets him on the road and recognizes both his strength and the distinctive spotted marks that inspire his nickname. Tang Long joins Liangshan when Huyan Zhuo’s chain-linked armored cavalry is battering the stronghold’s forces and ordinary weapons have failed to stop the formation.
Tang Long knows the answer: the hook-sickle spear can cut at horses’ legs and break the linked advance. He also knows the one instructor capable of teaching it properly—his cousin Xu Ning, an imperial guardsman. Because Xu Ning will not simply abandon the capital, Tang Long helps arrange a deception. Shi Qian steals Xu Ning’s treasured armor, Tang Long pretends to pursue the thief with him, and the trail leads Xu Ning into Liangshan hands. Tang Long then forges the needed equipment while Xu Ning trains the selected troops, and Huyan Zhuo’s feared cavalry is defeated.
At the grand assembly Tang Long ranks eighty-eighth and supervises armor and weapons. The number is modest, but the hook-sickle episode gives him strategic weight beyond his seat: he understands the enemy’s mechanism, names a practical counter, recruits the necessary expert, and manufactures the answer. After amnesty he continues with the campaigns. During the southern war he is wounded in the assault on Qingxi and dies from the injury, ending the career of the craftsman whose knowledge once saved Liangshan from one of its hardest battlefield problems.
