Xu Ning
Overview
Xu Ning is one of the heroes of Water Margin. Originally an instructor of the Imperial Guards’ Golden Lancer Unit in the Song capital, he is renowned for his mastery of the hooked-lance technique and is nicknamed the “Golden Lancer.” To defeat Huyan Zhuo’s formidable chain-linked cavalry, the Liangshan outlaws devise a scheme that brings Xu Ning and his family to the stronghold, where he teaches the Liangshan troops to use hooked lances and ultimately helps break the cavalry formation. Xu Ning embodies the image of a professional Song military officer: highly skilled yet restrained in temperament. Less flamboyant than Lu Zhishen or Li Kui and less tragic than Lin Chong or Yang Zhi, his specialized martial expertise earns him a place among Liangshan’s “Eight Tiger Cub Vanguard Generals.”
