The Shutong Twin Jian Maces are Qin Qiong’s characteristic weapons in the Sui-Tang heroic tradition. A jian is a rigid Chinese striking weapon that delivers force through its body. The name Shutong Twin Jian Maces preserves this weapon identity and the paired use associated with Qin Qiong.
Chapter 56 of Sui-Tang Romance places Qin Shubao’s paired jian beside Yuchi Jingde’s single rigid whip. An exchange of weapons to strike stone becomes a demonstration of their martial skill. The two sets have related striking functions while remaining distinct signs of their respective wielders.
Chapter 8 also describes worn gilding and the ridges and grooves of Qin Qiong’s weapons. These belong to that version’s account. The enduring identifying features are the pair of rigid weapons and the skill with which Qin Qiong uses them.
