The Twin Monastic Sabers are the paired blades associated with Wu Song’s identity as the Pilgrim in Water Margin. They accompany the headband, robe, and travelling papers that allow the fugitive to take on a new outward identity.
In chapter 31 of the 120-chapter text, Sun Erniang supplies the belongings of a dead itinerant ascetic, including two blades of patterned refined iron kept in a sharkskin sheath. Wu Song leaves wearing the two sabers after adopting the disguise. The text’s ominous account of their sound adds atmosphere without establishing a separate system of magical powers.
The pair marks a change in Wu Song’s story: the bare-handed tiger fighter becomes the armed wandering pilgrim. The blades are fighting weapons within that narrative, and their monastic association explains the character’s appearance rather than promising peaceful conduct.
