Wang Jin is an important martial instructor who appears near the beginning of Water Margin. He serves as an instructor of the imperial guards in the capital and is a highly accomplished fighter, but his position becomes dangerous after Gao Qiu rises to power. Gao Qiu remembers an earlier humiliation involving Wang Jin’s father and uses his new authority to persecute the son.
To escape further retaliation, Wang Jin leaves the capital with his mother and plans to seek protection in the northwest. When his mother becomes ill during the journey, they stay for a time at Shijia Village, where Wang Jin meets the young Shi Jin.
Wang Jin quickly recognizes that Shi Jin is enthusiastic about martial arts but lacks proper instruction. He therefore teaches him directly, correcting his technique and greatly improving his skill with weapons. This training becomes the foundation for Shi Jin’s later career in the martial world.
Wang Jin eventually departs with his mother and continues toward the frontier, fading from the main narrative. His brief appearance nevertheless has lasting importance: he demonstrates the danger created by Gao Qiu’s rise while also serving as the true martial teacher who transforms Shi Jin from an eager amateur into a capable warrior.
