Wang Ying, nicknamed the Short-Legged Tiger, is one of the three chiefs of Mount Qingfeng in Water Margin, alongside Yan Shun and Zheng Tianshou. He is short, quick-tempered, and repeatedly ruled by sexual appetite. Song Jiang must restrain him when captured women fall into the bandits’ hands, so Wang Ying’s early scenes mix real courage with behavior the narrative presents as dangerous and undisciplined.
At Zhu Family Village, Wang Ying rides out with a spear and meets Hu Sanniang. She defeats and captures him, reversing his usual pursuit of women with a public martial humiliation. After Liangshan takes the village, Song Jiang arranges their marriage. The match brings Wang Ying into a lasting partnership with the very warrior who overpowered him, and the couple later serve together in mounted operations. At the great assembly he ranks fifty-eighth as the Earthly Minute Star.
Wang Ying is not placed among Liangshan’s supreme champions. His rank and repeated need for rescue make him a middling cavalry officer, brave enough to fight but often mastered by stronger opponents or his own impulses. His end comes in the Fang La campaign when Zheng Biao uses supernatural force in battle and spears him from the saddle. Hu Sanniang immediately charges to avenge her husband and is killed by a gilded brick. Their deaths complete one of the novel’s harshest paired reversals: the woman who once captured Wang Ying finally falls because she refuses to leave his death unanswered.
