Wei Yan is one of Shu Han’s major generals in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, known for battlefield courage, aggressive instincts, and a forceful personality. After entering Liu Bei’s service, he takes part in the campaigns that establish Shu power in the southwest and later becomes an important commander in Hanzhong and the northern expeditions.
During Zhuge Liang’s campaigns against Wei, Wei Yan emerges as one of the army’s leading field commanders. He famously proposes a daring advance through the Ziwu Valley, hoping to strike rapidly into the Guanzhong region and overturn the strategic situation with a surprise attack. Zhuge Liang rejects the plan as too dangerous.
Despite his military ability, Wei Yan has a bitter relationship with the official Yang Yi. After Zhuge Liang dies at Wuzhang Plains and the Shu army begins its withdrawal, the rivalry between the two men erupts into open conflict. Each side accuses the other of rebellion.
Wei Yan is eventually pursued and killed by Ma Dai. His story combines genuine military distinction with one of the most dramatic internal crises to follow Zhuge Liang’s death, leaving him remembered as both a formidable commander and a deeply contentious figure within Shu.
