Overview

Guan Xing is the son of Guan Yu and younger brother of Guan Ping, and in Romance of the Three Kingdoms he emerges as an important member of the second generation of Shu Han warriors. The novel emphasizes his inheritance of his father’s martial courage and ideals of loyalty and righteousness. He frequently fights alongside Zhang Bao, the son of Zhang Fei; the two become sworn brothers and representatives of Shu Han’s younger generation of warriors. After Guan Yu’s death, Guan Xing assumes a clear role as an heir to his father’s legacy, linking the Guan family to the continuation of the heroic tradition of Shu Han.
