Wen Qiong, commonly called Marshal Wen, is a martial protector in Daoist and popular religious traditions. His cult developed strongly in the southern coastal region of Zhejiang, where epidemic disease was a recurring danger. Ritual traditions therefore remember him above all as a commander who confronts plague demons and drives harmful influences away from communities.
Religious paintings and temple images present him as an armored marshal with the bearing of a field commander, often placed among larger companies of celestial generals. Daoist ritual absorbed the local guardian into organized exorcistic service: priests summon martial officers such as Wen Qiong to arrest, expel, or destroy malignant forces. Ritual images make that protective command visible to worshippers. His durable identity comes from this combination of regional worship, plague protection, ritual command, and a visibly military sacred form.
