White Elephant Demon

白象精

The White Elephant Demon is the second of the three rulers of Lion-Camel Ridge in Journey to the West. He shares Lion-Camel Cave with the Azure Lion Demon and allies with the Golden-Winged Great Peng to capture Tang Seng. He fights with a spear and supports the coordinated traps and battles arranged by the three sworn brothers.

His defining power comes from his white-elephant form. The long trunk can lash, seize, and wrap around an opponent; during the fighting he uses it to catch Sun Wukong. Wukong counters by growing in size and attacking the trunk, turning the demon’s strongest natural weapon into a source of pain.

At the conclusion of the Lion-Camel conflict, Samantabhadra arrives with Manjushri and Tathagata. The White Elephant is revealed as Samantabhadra’s mount, resumes his animal shape under his master’s authority, and is led away. His place between the Azure Lion and Great Peng, the combat use of his trunk, and his return to Samantabhadra define his part in the three-demon alliance.
