The Golden-Winged Great Peng is the third of the three demon rulers confronted at Lion-Camel Ridge in Journey to the West. He allies with the Azure Lion and White Elephant, but his own seat is the conquered Lion-Camel Kingdom, where the human population has been slaughtered and replaced by demons. He proposes the plan to seize Tang Seng and proves the most determined of the three brothers.
Great Peng fights with a painted-shaft halberd and reveals the speed of his bird form when Sun Wukong tries to escape. With a single spread of his wings he can cover immense distances, repeatedly overtaking the somersault-cloud traveler. He also uses a yin-yang two-qi bottle to imprison Wukong, though the pilgrim eventually breaks out.
When celestial and bodhisattva aid cannot end the crisis, Wukong appeals to Tathagata Buddha. Tathagata explains that Great Peng is born of the same primordial phoenix lineage as the peacock, making the demon his elder maternal uncle by the novel’s reckoning. The Buddha immobilizes him above his own head and brings him back to Vulture Peak. His speed, royal domain, kinship claim, and resistance to ordinary capture make him the dominant threat of the Lion-Camel episode.
