Wu Yunzhao

Wu Yunzhao is the son of the loyal minister Wu Jianzhang and the Marquis of Nanyang in Sui-Tang Romance. After Emperor Yang has his father killed, Wu raises Nanyang in revolt to avenge the family. The novel counts him as the fifth great warrior, strong enough to lift tripods and hold a city against imperial forces. When Nanyang finally falls, his wife Lady Jia throws herself into a well. Wu breaks out carrying their infant son and entrusts the child at a Guan Yu temple before seeking refuge with Li Zitong.

His reputation is tested again when Yuwen Chengdu blocks the heroes’ passage. Wu Yunzhao, Wu Tianxi, and Xiong Kuohai fight the imperial champion together. They hold him for a time, but the prolonged struggle exhausts them until Pei Yuanqing arrives and forces relief. Wu’s place among the foremost warriors is therefore substantial but not absolute: he can stand in the greatest contests, yet the novel still measures him against the few men ranked above him.

At the Yangzhou tournament Wu defeats several opponents and remains a serious contender for the championship seal. He then faces Zuo Xiong of Gaoli, whose horse seems to have no tail. During their exchange the animal suddenly releases a concealed long tail and lashes Wu on the head, killing him through surprise rather than superior weapon skill. His death ends a course shaped by dynastic violence: he rebels for his murdered father, loses his household in the fall of Nanyang, and dies while still pursuing the honor of a great warrior.
