Pei Yuanqing is the young hammer champion of the Sui–Tang romance tradition. Usually ranked third among the celebrated heroes, he enters battle in armor on horseback with a pair of Eight-Ribbed Plum-Blossom Silver Hammers. Their enormous weight turns every exchange into a test of force, while his youth sharply contrasts with the seasoned commanders and older champions around him.
His fame is fixed by encounters with the strongest warriors of the age. Pei Yuanqing withstands the pressure of Yuwen Chengdu and later meets Li Yuanba, whose unmatched strength overwhelms nearly everyone else. The clash of their paired hammers establishes Pei as one of the few opponents worthy of Li Yuanba’s attention even though he cannot defeat him. Political changes then carry Pei and his family toward the Wagang camp, where his power becomes part of the rebel army’s assault strength.
Pei Yuanqing’s end comes through strategy rather than a fair trial of weapons. Lured into the confined ground of Qinglong Mountain, he is caught in a fire attack and dies before brute strength can break the trap. The episode preserves the tragedy of a fighter who can survive direct blows but not a prepared killing ground. Silver armor, a compact mounted stance, and two oversized faceted hammers are therefore essential to his image, as is the unfinished promise of a champion who dies young.
