Ximen Qing is an important antagonist in the Water Margin story surrounding Wu Song, Wu Dalang, and Pan Jinlian. He is portrayed as a wealthy and influential local man.
After encountering Pan Jinlian, Ximen Qing begins an affair with her. Because she is already married to Wu Dalang, their relationship quickly creates a dangerous conflict.
When Wu Dalang discovers the affair and attempts to intervene, Ximen Qing injures him. Ximen Qing and Pan Jinlian subsequently become involved in the plot that results in Wu Dalang’s poisoning and death.
After Wu Song returns, he becomes suspicious of his brother’s death and gradually uncovers the truth. He eventually confronts Ximen Qing and kills him, completing his revenge for Wu Dalang.
Ximen Qing is not a traditional heroic figure, but he is one of the principal antagonists in Wu Song’s personal narrative. As a Person Subject, he connects Wu Song, Wu Dalang, and Pan Jinlian within one of the best-known relationship networks in Water Margin.
