Xu Huang, courtesy name Gongming, is an important Cao Wei commander in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, known for discipline, steadiness, and reliable battlefield command. He first serves under Yang Feng before eventually entering Cao Cao’s service, where he becomes a long-standing member of Cao’s military establishment.
After joining Cao Cao, Xu Huang participates in the Battle of Guandu and in the campaigns that consolidate northern China. He continues to distinguish himself in later wars, including operations against forces such as Ma Chao and Han Sui, gradually emerging as a commander capable of leading major forces independently.
During Guan Yu’s northern campaign, the flooding of the Seven Armies leaves Cao Ren under severe pressure at Fancheng. With the position in danger, Xu Huang is ordered to lead reinforcements and finds himself facing Guan Yu, a man he had known before the two became battlefield enemies.
Xu Huang ultimately breaks Guan Yu’s pressure around Fancheng and helps relieve the crisis. Cao Cao praises both his discipline and his military performance. The campaign establishes Xu Huang as one of the most important Wei commanders to confront Guan Yu directly.
