Xuan Zan, the “Ugly Prince Consort,” enters Water Margin with a bitter contrast between ability and fortune. He wins recognition through a martial contest and marries a prince’s daughter, but his wife is ashamed of his appearance and dies. Instead of rising through the connection, Xuan Zan is left in a minor capital defense post. When Cai Jing needs a commander against Liangshan, he uses the chance to recommend Guan Sheng as a man of strategy and battlefield authority.
Xuan Zan rides with Guan Sheng as rear commander, while Hao Siwen leads the van. After Guan Sheng is drawn into Liangshan’s trap, Xuan Zan fights Qin Ming and is unsettled when Sun Li joins the attack; his saber loses order and Qin Ming knocks him from the saddle. Song Jiang releases the captives from their bonds, and all three officers accept Liangshan. They later suffer capture again at Lingzhou, but Li Kui, Jiao Ting, and Bao Xu break the prison carts and turn the reverse into a renewed assault.
At the grand assembly Xuan Zan ranks fortieth and joins the sixteen cavalry scouts. The position gives formal weight to a warrior whom the capital judged by his face. His final scene comes in the southern campaign at Suzhou. Xuan Zan meets the defender Guo Shiguang near Drinking-Horse Bridge; the two fight to the death and perish together beneath the bridge. His arc moves from courtly humiliation to earned command and closes in a duel where appearance has no relevance—only endurance, steel, and mutual destruction.
