Yang Jiumei is a young woman general of the Yang family in Generals of the Yang Family. She rides armed with a blade and appears beside Yang Bajie and other members of the household, but receives independent combat episodes. When the Liao warrior Ma Li Qingji breaks into the Song line, Jiumei meets him on horseback, fights for more than twenty bouts, and cuts him down with her pole-blade.
Her boldest mission begins when members of the family are trapped in Youzhou. Disguised as a male warrior named Hu Yuan, she displays enough archery and horsemanship to enter enemy service, planning to work from within. The disguise is eventually exposed and she is imprisoned, but she persuades a sympathetic jailer to escape with her just as Yang Wulang attacks the city with his warrior monks. Brother and sister fight their way through Youzhou and return south together.
Jiumei later joins the women of the Yang household in the expedition to relieve Yang Zongbao. She helps command twenty thousand troops in the left camp and rides out with Yang Qijie against Meng Xin and Princess Baihua. Baihua’s meteor hammer strikes Jiumei’s horse and throws her down, but Qijie shoots the enemy princess from the saddle, allowing the Song troops to capture her. These episodes define Jiumei through mounted courage, disguise, initiative, and coordinated action with her sisters rather than through a merely ceremonial family title.
