Zhang Kui enters The Story of Yue Fei not as an enemy of Gao Chong but as a young ally found during Niu Gao’s urgent grain mission. A descendant of the Prince of Dongzheng, he has withdrawn to a mountain stronghold because corrupt ministers make official service seem dishonorable. He stops the convoy, fights Zheng Huai with a silver spear for more than thirty bouts, and yields only when Niu Gao explains that the grain is meant to save the court and Yue Fei at Niutou Mountain.
Zhang Kui joins the mission and swears brotherhood with Niu Gao and Zheng Huai. The group soon meets Gao Chong, whose skill establishes the hierarchy among them: Zhang Kui and Zheng Huai attack together, Niu Gao adds his maces, and even all three cannot defeat the newcomer. Once intentions are explained, Gao Chong also joins. He leads the charge through the Jin siege while Zhang Kui and Zheng Huai protect the flanks and Niu Gao guards the convoy. Together they break more than ten camps and deliver the food that keeps the surrounded army alive.
Zhang Kui remains among the Yue commanders and later joins the central assault on the Golden Dragon Formation. His standing is that of a proven young officer, below the extraordinary Gao Chong but fully capable of hard mounted fighting and command. The novel’s closing decree lists him among the deceased loyalists, honors him as a tutelary deity, and adds marquis rank. His true entry into the Yue cause is the convoy: a roadside challenger who chooses service once he learns whose survival depends on the grain.
