Zhenwu Dadi, the Perfected Warrior, is a major Daoist deity associated with the north, the dark celestial quarter, and the suppression of demons. His cult grew from the ancient Xuanwu emblem and became especially prominent through imperial support and the great temple complex of Mount Wudang during the Ming period.
He is usually shown with long loose hair and bare feet, wearing a dark robe or armor and holding a sword, sometimes marked with the stars of the Northern Dipper. A tortoise entwined with a snake appears beneath or beside him, preserving the northern Xuanwu symbolism from which his image developed. Calm authority rather than frantic motion characterizes many statues: the sword, exposed feet, and subdued tortoise-and-snake make him immediately recognizable as a celestial warrior who controls dangerous forces and protects temples, communities, and the state.
