Yang Lin is an important military figure in the Sui–Tang heroic tradition, commonly portrayed as a senior member of the Sui ruling house and a veteran commander with great battlefield experience.
As rebellion spreads across the empire, Yang Lin remains loyal to the Sui and leads campaigns against the emerging heroic factions. He repeatedly comes into conflict with figures such as Qin Qiong and Cheng Yaojin, who eventually become central members of the anti-Sui martial world.
Yang Lin is not defined only by personal combat. In many storytelling traditions he also employs large military formations and elaborate defensive systems, including famous episodes involving the Copper Banner Formation and other challenges that require multiple heroes to overcome.
As the Sui regime collapses, Yang Lin ultimately falls with the old order. He remains one of the most recognizable veteran commanders on the imperial side and an important antagonist whose military pressure helps bring the wandering heroes into larger alliances.
