Cheng Yaojin
Overview
Cheng Yaojin, historically known as Cheng Zhijie, was a general of the late Sui and early Tang periods and one of the founding military figures of the Tang dynasty. In Shuo Tang, Sui-Tang Romance, and related popular traditions, he develops into a humorous yet formidable warrior—bold and straightforward, seemingly rough but surprisingly shrewd, and blessed with extraordinary good fortune. His famous “three axe moves” became a fixture of popular storytelling, while the expression “Cheng Yaojin suddenly charges out halfway” remains a widely used Chinese saying for an unexpected intervention. Few figures of the Sui–Tang heroic cycle have entered popular culture as deeply as Cheng Yaojin.
