Yunzhongzi is the immortal of Jade Pillar Cave on Mount Zhongnan in Investiture of the Gods. Seeing a fox aura rising from the Shang palace, he cuts a sword from an old pine branch and presents it to King Zhou. Hung above Daji’s quarters, the plain wooden sword makes the fox spirit violently ill, but the king burns it at her request. Yunzhongzi recognizes that the dynasty has rejected an early chance to stop the disaster and returns to his mountain.
His other lasting role is as master of Lei Zhenzi. Ji Chang finds the abandoned infant during a thunderstorm and names him his hundredth son; Yunzhongzi accepts the child and carries him away for training. Seven years later, when Ji Chang escapes the passes, the immortal sends Lei Zhenzi to search for a weapon. The disciple eats two immortal apricots, grows wind-and-thunder wings, and receives a golden staff and spells that let him fly to his father’s rescue.
Yunzhongzi later supports the Zhou side during the supernatural phase of the war, appearing with the Chan immortals in the campaigns against the Ten Absolute, Immortal-Execution, and Myriad Immortals formations. His water-and-fire basket and Daoist arts belong to that wider service, but the pine sword and Lei Zhenzi’s transformation are his clearest acts. A quiet mountain adept carrying a basket contrasts naturally with the winged, golden-staff disciple he has trained for battle.
