The Jie tradition is one of the great supernatural factions of Investiture of the Gods and one of the main reasons the war between Shang and Zhou grows into a conflict involving entire networks of immortals.
At its summit stands Tongtian Jiaozhu, whose many disciples include powerful adepts armed with extraordinary treasures, magical arts, and dangerous formations.
The struggle begins as a war in the mortal world.
But as Xiqi receives increasing support from disciples connected with the Chan tradition, more and more figures associated with Jie are drawn into the fighting.
Some descend to avenge fallen friends or fellow disciples.
Others are invited to help.
Still others may have had little interest in the mortal war at first, only to become involved when a master, disciple, friend, or fellow member of their lineage is defeated.
The conflict therefore escalates through relationships.
When ordinary generals fail, extraordinary adepts appear.
When an adept is defeated, another immortal arrives.
When that immortal falls, masters, senior disciples, and fellow members of the same lineage may enter the struggle.
Step by step, a mortal campaign spreads into the supernatural world.
Figures associated with Jie are especially memorable for strange treasures and great formations. As the conflict deepens, increasingly spectacular confrontations emerge, including the Ten Absolute Formations, the Immortal-Slaying Formation, and the Myriad Immortals Formation.
Eventually Tongtian Jiaozhu himself becomes directly involved, bringing the struggle between the great supernatural lineages to its highest point.
Yet battlefield opposition is not necessarily the end of the story.
Many figures associated with Jie die during the war and later enter the Investiture, receiving divine offices of their own.
Within Celestial Generals, the Jie tradition is therefore not a subject of real-world religious history. It is a vast legendary character network: Tongtian Jiaozhu, his disciples, their friendships and grudges, magical treasures, deadly formations, and stories of revenge all spread outward from this faction.
