Tongtian Jiaozhu

通天教主

Tongtian Jiaozhu is the lord of Biyou Palace and leader of the Jie teaching in Investiture of the Gods. His disciples include a vast range of immortals, spirits, and transformed creatures. As losses mount and Guangchengzi repeatedly visits Biyou Palace, Tongtian concludes that the Chan side has humiliated his teaching and personally enters the conflict.

He sets the Immortal-Execution Formation with the four swords of Zhuxian. Laozi’s manifested forms cannot injure him, but Laozi, Yuanshi Tianzun, Jieyin, and Zhunti eventually attack the four gates together and remove the swords. Tongtian then gathers his remaining followers into the Myriad Immortals Formation, riding his kui-ox and commanding disciples including the sacred mothers, beast immortals, and Long-Eared Dingguang Immortal.

The second formation ends in slaughter, capture, and desertion. Tongtian still seeks revenge until his teacher Hongjun Daoren arrives, rebukes all three brothers, and forces them to swallow restraining pills. Tongtian leaves with Hongjun. His scale comes from disciples and formations as much as personal magic: he is a teacher whose anger turns a sectarian grievance into the final supernatural war.
