Bao Xu

鲍旭

Bao Xu, nicknamed the God of Death, begins as the lord of Dead Tree Mountain in Water Margin. His dark face, violent temper, and broad sword make him a natural companion for Li Kui. Jiao Ting introduces the two, and Bao Xu agrees to join Liangshan. Before formally reaching the stronghold, their new band attacks the escort carrying Xuan Zan and Hao Siwen to execution, frees the prisoners, and helps take Lingzhou from an unexpected direction.

At the great assembly Bao Xu ranks sixtieth as the Earthly Savage Star and becomes an infantry officer. His usual place is beside Li Kui, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun. The two shield bearers break an opening with throwing blades and short spears; Bao Xu and Li Kui then drive into close quarters with sword and axes. The group is not subtle, but it is repeatedly used where a formation must be torn open by men willing to enter its most crowded point.

During the assault on Hangzhou, the four swear to capture the formidable Shi Bao. They rush his horse, kill enemy officers, and force him back toward the gate. Song Jiang orders a withdrawal under stones and timber from the walls, but Bao Xu has already pushed inside. Shi Bao waits in ambush beside the entrance and cuts him in two with a single slanting stroke. His death grows directly from his greatest quality. Bao Xu wins his place through fearless forward pressure, and finally advances one step farther than his companions can protect.
