Li Kui
Overview
Li Kui is perhaps one of the most famous, flamboyant, and unmistakable heroes of Water Margin. Dark-skinned and ferocious in temperament, he is nicknamed the “Black Whirlwind.” Wielding a pair of broad axes, he possesses tremendous strength and fights with explosive, reckless violence. Fiercely loyal to Song Jiang, he charges into battle with little concern for consequences, often appearing to his enemies almost like a terrifying god of slaughter. Yet Li Kui has a strikingly different side: he is deeply devoted to his mother and, around Song Jiang and his fellow brothers, can behave with the innocence of a child. Brutality and innocence, savagery and loyalty coexist within him, making Li Kui one of the most controversial yet unforgettable figures in Water Margin.
