Cao Ning is a formidable young general in The Story of Yue Fei, fighting for the Jin side with a heavy iron spear. His arrival immediately costs the Song army two officers: he kills Xu Qing and Jin Biao, then battles Zhang Xian for more than forty bouts without a decision. Yan Chengfang also meets him for over forty bouts, and the repeated stalemates force Yue Fei’s camp to suspend battle while seeking another answer.
Wang Zuo and Lu Wenlong reveal that Cao Ning’s father, Cao Rong, came from Song territory but defected to Jin. Cao Ning is moved by the chance to return to his ancestral allegiance. Carrying Wang Zuo’s letter, he enters Yue Fei’s camp, surrenders, and is accepted. The change seems ready to add another exceptional spear fighter to the Song cause, much as Lu Wenlong had earlier been recovered from Jin service.
The resolution is tragic. Cao Rong arrives to drag his son back. Cao Ning urges his father to return to Song, but Cao Rong attacks him; in anger, the son thrusts with his spear and kills the father. Yue Fei refuses to keep a man guilty of patricide, regardless of his talent or new loyalty. Cao Ning understands that neither army can erase the act and cuts his own throat. His head is displayed for a day and then buried, closing a story in which political return cannot repair a family crime committed in a single furious moment.
