Flying-Stone Mastery

飛石絕技

When an Ordinary Stone Becomes a Signature Skill

Flying-Stone Mastery is Zhang Qing's most recognizable combat skill. It does not depend on a specially made treasure, but on ordinary stones small enough to hold in one hand. What raises them beyond common projectiles is Zhang Qing's exact command of timing, distance, speed, and placement. The material is unremarkable; his mastery makes it capable of producing a near-ambush effect in mounted combat.

Stones from the Pouch

Water Margin describes Zhang Qing taking stones from a pouch and striking before an opponent has time to respond. Their small size and speed make them difficult to see and harder to block. He can use them repeatedly while riding, facing an enemy, and adjusting to changing distance. The feat depends not only on strength, but on judgment, rhythm, and unwavering accuracy.

One Stone Resets the Mighty Warrior

The exceptional quality of this skill is not simply that it is accurate. It can bypass the normal contest between powerful warriors. In Water Margin, renowned fighters may exchange weapons for dozens of rounds before superiority becomes clear. Against Zhang Qing, that familiar structure can be interrupted at any moment by one small stone. However formidable an opponent has appeared, a sudden hit can break the attack and even end the encounter.

Zhang Qing is dangerous because his mastery can deny an opponent the chance to use strength, technique, and battlefield reputation. Even a warrior celebrated as a match for ten thousand men may be forced out of combat in the instant the stone lands. Its legendary force lies in the contrast: it looks ordinary, yet arrives too quickly to defend against and with astonishing precision.

Why Zhang Qing Is Called “Featherless Arrow”

The sobriquet “Featherless Arrow” is inseparable from this skill. His stones have no arrow feathers, yet they travel with arrow-like speed and accuracy. Flying-Stone Mastery is therefore not a general history of hidden weapons or throwing techniques, but a concentrated expression of Zhang Qing's identity. In his hands, an ordinary stone can change the rules of an encounter. The legendary privilege belongs to the person and his mastery, not to the stone itself.
