Golden-Winged Great Peng

大鹏金翅雕

The Golden-Winged Great Peng is an important divine-bird image in Chinese mythological literature.

Within CG, this Subject is a generic mythical-bird and original-form visual node. It can support characters from different works who possess this form, while those characters remain separate identities.

Yuyi Xian in Investiture of the Gods

Yuyi Xian usually appears as a Daoist, but his true form is a colossal Golden-Winged Great Peng.

When he reveals that form, his wings cover the sky and beat with the force of thunder. The bird has tremendous scale and produces immense wind, and he even attempts to destroy Xiqi with his wings.

The Golden-Winged Great Peng is therefore central to Yuyi Xian’s visual identity.

The Great Peng in Journey to the West

The Lion-Camel Ridge story in Journey to the West also includes an important character whose original form is a Golden-Winged Great Peng.

This does not mean that Yuyi Xian in Investiture of the Gods and the Great Peng character in Journey to the West are the same person.

CG keeps their character identities separate. This Subject carries only their shared divine-bird and original-form visual type.

A Colossal Bird of Prey

The Golden-Winged Great Peng should never read as an ordinary eagle or hawk.

Its defining qualities are enormous scale, golden wings, a span that obscures the sky, catastrophic wind from each wingbeat, and the presence of a divine bird rather than a natural raptor.

Distinct from the Blue Luan

The Blue Luan is noble, elongated, and closely associated with an immortal mount.

The Golden-Winged Great Peng emphasizes power, speed, immense wingspan, and overwhelming physical scale. The two require completely different visual languages.

CG Visual Language

  • a colossal bird of prey
  • golden wing feathers
  • body color left for later Canon decisions
  • a sharp eagle-like head
  • wings far larger than those of an ordinary bird
  • forceful wind pressure
  • extreme speed
  • mythic scale

It should never be designed as a winged humanoid or angel. The character state and the divine-bird original form remain separate.
