Lu Fang, nicknamed Little Marquis Wen, is a mounted halberd fighter in Water Margin. He first occupies Duiying Mountain with a band of followers and carries a sky-piercing halberd, the weapon that also evokes the martial fame of Lu Bu behind his nickname. His own story begins not as an imitation of that earlier warrior, but as a local leader ready to test anyone who approaches his ground.
Guo Sheng arrives with a similar weapon and challenges him. Their long duel remains even until the decorative tassels on the two halberds become tangled overhead. Neither rider can free his weapon without yielding. Hua Rong ends the stalemate by shooting an arrow through the knotted tassels and separating them without injuring either man. Impressed by the shot and by Song Jiang’s reputation, both fighters abandon their rivalry and join the company together.
At Liangshan, Lu Fang and Guo Sheng continue as a matched pair. They attend the central command, carry orders, and ride in the forces surrounding Song Jiang rather than disappearing into a nameless cavalry rank. Lu Fang survives many campaigns after the amnesty, but dies during the war against Fang La when his fight with Bai Qin carries both men over a cliff. The red-toned Little Marquis Wen, long halberd, and mirrored partnership with Guo Sheng define his action.
