Shi Bao

石宝

Shi Bao is one of Fang La’s most dangerous marshals in Water Margin. He first stands out in the defense of Hangzhou, riding out with a Wind-Splitting Saber and carrying a meteor hammer for sudden attacks. When he meets Guan Sheng, the two trade more than twenty bouts. Shi Bao turns away, but Guan Sheng checks his pursuit because he recognizes both the quality of the saber work and the likelihood of a trap. That judgment immediately establishes Shi Bao as an opponent worthy of Liangshan’s leading cavalry general.

The following battles confirm the warning. Shi Bao feigns defeat against the impatient Suo Chao and kills him with the hidden hammer, then cuts Deng Fei down when he rushes to the rescue. He later loses his horse when Li Kui, Bao Xu, Xiang Chong, and Li Gun swarm him at the gate, yet retreats among his troops and kills Bao Xu when the infantryman presses too far into the city. These victories come through nerve and timing as much as physical strength: he reads pursuit, chooses confined ground, and punishes enemies who mistake movement for flight.

After Hangzhou falls, Shi Bao helps hold Wulong Ridge and takes part in the night ambush that nearly destroys Song Jiang’s force. He remains loyal even as Fang La’s territory contracts and reinforcements fail to arrive. Once the ridge is bypassed and the southern defense can no longer be restored, he refuses capture and ends his own life. His story gives Fang La’s side a commander whose skill is acknowledged by the very heroes sent to defeat him, and whose victories account for several of Liangshan’s most painful losses.
