Ruan Xiaoqi, nicknamed the Living King Yama, is the youngest and most unruly of the three Ruan brothers in Water Margin. The brothers are poor fishermen at Shijie Village when Wu Yong recruits them into Chao Gai’s plot to seize the Birthday Gifts. Their knowledge of the lake gives the fugitives a refuge after the robbery, and Ruan Xiaoqi fights in the boats when government troops try to close in. The episode carries him from village hardship into the founding circle of Liangshan.
On the mountain he becomes one of the water commanders and ranks thirty-first among the 108 Stars, under the title Heavenly Defeated Star. His value is clearest in river and lake warfare: he works with his brothers and the other naval leaders to lure pursuers, overturn boats, move troops through channels, and strike larger forces where horses and armor offer little advantage. After the amnesty he continues through the imperial campaigns, surviving losses that kill many senior companions.
His last crisis comes after Fang La’s defeat. Finding the rebel ruler’s crown, robe, belt, and shoes, Ruan Xiaoqi puts them on for sport. Hostile officers report the act as an insult to the throne, and his rank is taken away. The punishment does not destroy him. He returns to Shijie Village, supports his mother, and lives to old age. The ending suits a man who never becomes comfortable with court discipline: a founding outlaw and proven sailor who survives war, loses office through reckless humor, and chooses family and the waters of home over official honor.
