Li Jun

李俊

Li Jun, the “River Dragon,” first becomes essential to Water Margin when Song Jiang is trapped on the Jieyang River. Zhang Heng has taken the traveler aboard a death ferry and is about to kill him when Li Jun arrives, recognizes Song Jiang, and stops the murder. He later joins the armed rescue at Jiangzhou. From these episodes onward, his friendship with Song Jiang and his authority among the river men place him at the center of Liangshan’s water forces.

At the grand assembly Li Jun ranks twenty-sixth as the Heavenly Longevity Star and stands first among the naval commanders. He directs ambushes in creeks and lakes, coordinates the other boat leaders, and helps turn waterways into Liangshan’s defense against larger government armies. During the southern campaign he again combines courage with planning. Near Suzhou he makes common cause with Fei Bao and other local water fighters, enters the city by boat and disguise, and uses Ling Zhen’s cannon fire as a signal for the assault.

Li Jun also understands when victory has stopped offering freedom. Before the survivors return to accept court appointments, he withdraws with Tong Wei and Tong Meng, using illness as cover and choosing the open sea over official service. In the extended ending the three reach Siam, where Li Jun rises to rulership. His conclusion is one of the few genuinely expansive escapes from the Liangshan tragedy: the man who once saved Song Jiang on a river survives the campaigns, leaves the court’s reach, and carries his waterborne leadership into another country.
