Tathagata Buddha presides at Vulture Peak in Journey to the West and stands at both the beginning and the goal of the pilgrimage. When Sun Wukong breaks through Heaven’s defenses, Tathagata challenges him to escape the palm of his hand. Wukong believes he has reached the edge of the universe, but never leaves the Buddha’s palm; the five fingers become Five Elements Mountain and hold him until the scripture seeker arrives.
Tathagata later announces that the eastern lands need the Great Vehicle scriptures and entrusts Guanyin with finding a pilgrim. Throughout the journey he resolves dangers beyond ordinary heavenly forces: he alone distinguishes the true Wukong from the Six-Eared Macaque, explains the Golden-Winged Great Peng’s kinship through the primordial phoenix line, and personally prevents the bird from escaping.
At the journey’s end, Tang Seng and his disciples reach Vulture Peak, receive the scriptures, and are assigned their final ranks. Tathagata’s power is shown less by weapons than by knowledge, spiritual authority, and control over transformations and cosmic space. His decisions connect Wukong’s punishment, Guanyin’s preparations, the eighty-one trials, and the final transmission of the canon.
