Tathagata Buddha is one of the highest authorities in Journey to the West and is directly connected with both the pilgrimage and the fate of Sun Wukong.
When Sun Wukong’s rebellion throws Heaven into disorder and the celestial forces fail to subdue him, Tathagata intervenes. He challenges the Monkey King and ultimately traps him beneath the Five Elements Mountain, bringing the great rebellion in Heaven to an end.
Years later, Tang Seng undertakes the journey westward in search of Buddhist scriptures. The pilgrimage ultimately leads to the sacred realm where the scriptures are received, placing Tathagata at the final destination of the entire narrative.
Within the Celestial Generals character network, Tathagata Buddha primarily connects Sun Wukong, Tang Seng, Guanyin, and the larger pilgrimage system. His central cultural identity is not that of an armored martial warrior, so he belongs in the Person Subject layer rather than being automatically placed in the CG Deity layer.
