Xiong Kuohai is the giant strongman of the Sui–Tang heroic tradition, commonly ranked fourth among the celebrated champions. Stories present him as a broad, powerful close-combat fighter whose reputation rests on physical force rather than court rank. A heavy cooked-copper staff is his most stable weapon in the major storytelling line, although stage and regional retellings sometimes substitute other massive arms.
He moves among the rebels and rival kings who gather as Sui rule collapses, meeting other famed warriors in tests of courage and strength. Yet no ordinary duel defines him as completely as the disaster at Yangzhou. When the great gate falls and threatens to crush the assembled heroes, Xiong Kuohai braces beneath it and lifts the enormous weight with both arms, creating a passage for others to escape from the trapped ground.
The rescue consumes his strength. After bearing the gate while men and horses pass, he is finally crushed beneath it. His death turns ranking-list power into sacrifice: the body praised for impossible strength becomes the support that saves a crowd. A huge frame, wide planted stance, heavy staff laid aside, raised gate beams, and visible strain communicate the episode without exaggerating him into a supernatural being. He is remembered because the last use of his strength is for others.
