Yan Chengfang is the young purple-gold hammer general who first meets Yue Yun as an opponent in The Story of Yue Fei. Connected with Yan Qi and Wang Zuo’s lake forces, he comes to test his skill rather than submit without proof. The two youths fight for more than eighty bouts with paired hammers and neither gains an easy advantage, placing Yan Chengfang close to Yue Yun’s celebrated level.
Yue Yun finally feigns defeat and draws him into pursuit. After more than ten li, he turns with the technique called Meteor Chasing the Moon, strikes Yan Chengfang’s hammer, opens his grip, and sends the weapon to the ground. Yan Chengfang immediately acknowledges the result and asks to join him. Yue Yun lifts him up, and because he is one year older, the two swear brotherhood with Yue Yun as elder and Yan Chengfang as younger.
The new bond is tested at once. After Yang Zaixing dies at Little Shang River, Yue Yun charges the Jin camp alone; Yan Chengfang rides in to support him, and the pair fight through troops that Wuzhu finds difficult to contain. Years later Yan Chengfang remains a commander in Yue Lei’s northern army, leading the right wing with Wu Lian and joining the young generals against Wuzhu’s officers. His eighty-bout duel, honest submission, and continued command give him a clear standing: not above Yue Yun, but close enough that victory requires Yue Yun’s best stratagem and technique.
