Di Lei

狄雷

Di Lei is a young hammer warrior in The Story of Yue Fei, first identified as a former vanguard officer of Golden Gate Pass. An earlier mistaken clash with Yue Fei leaves him ashamed and unable to find a proper way into the marshal’s service. When Jin Wuzhu renews the invasion and the battle at Zhuxian Town swallows the Yue army, Di Lei sees a chance to redeem the offense through action rather than apology.

He puts on armor, takes his paired silver hammers, mounts a blue-maned horse, and rides toward the fighting. On the road he meets Fan Cheng and then Guan Ling, each arriving for the same purpose. The three young warriors refuse to wait outside the encirclement. They drive straight into the massed Jin troops to find Yue Fei, placing Di Lei among the reinforcements whose arrival helps the exhausted army fight its way through the crisis.

Years later, Di Lei rides again in Yue Lei’s northern expedition. He is assigned a flank with Ji Chengliang while other sons and young companions form the main divisions. In the final fighting against Wuzhu’s army, Di Lei joins Guan Ling, Lu Wenlong, Yan Chengfang, Fan Cheng, and Niu Tong in the mounted melee, and kills the Jin commander Ha Tongwu. The feat gives him a measured place among the younger generation: not the unrivaled champion of the army, but a proven hammer general trusted with command and capable of finishing a named enemy officer.
