Yang Chun is one of the three chiefs of Mount Shaohua in Water Margin, serving beside the strategist Zhu Wu and the impetuous Chen Da. When Chen Da proposes raiding Shijia Village, Yang Chun supports Zhu Wu’s warning that the local instructor Shi Jin is too formidable to attack carelessly. Chen Da ignores them, is captured, and leaves the remaining chiefs with a choice between abandoning a brother and walking into danger.
Yang Chun and Zhu Wu go to Shi Jin without trying to disguise their purpose. They ask that all three chiefs be allowed to share the same death, a display of loyalty that moves Shi Jin more deeply than threats could have done. He releases Chen Da and forms a friendship with the Mount Shaohua men. When that connection later exposes Shi Jin’s household, the mountain becomes his refuge. Years afterward Yang Chun again supports him during the Liangshan operation at Huazhou, helping the rescuers move through terrain and waters known to the local band.
At the grand assembly Yang Chun ranks seventy-third under the title Earthly Hidden Star and serves among Liangshan’s mounted officers. He is not presented as the equal of the army’s greatest champions; his importance lies in early judgment, loyalty, and continuity from the novel’s opening Shaohua episodes into the imperial campaigns. At Yuling Pass, Pang Wanchun draws Shi Jin’s group into an archery trap. Yang Chun dies in the same volley as Shi Jin, Chen Da, Li Zhong, and their companions, closing the brotherhood that began when he was willing to die for Chen Da at Shijia Village.
