Zhu Wu, nicknamed the “Resourceful Strategist,” is a Liangshan hero in Water Margin. He first appears as the leading figure among the outlaws of Mount Shaohua, where he is joined by Chen Da and Yang Chun and is distinguished by caution, planning, and tactical intelligence.
When Chen Da attacks Shijia Village and is captured by Shi Jin, Zhu Wu does not answer with a reckless assault. Instead, he and Yang Chun go directly to Shi Jin and appeal to his sense of brotherhood, a calculated act of loyalty that persuades Shi Jin to release their companion. The encounter establishes a lasting bond between Shi Jin and the Mount Shaohua group.
Shi Jin later takes refuge at Mount Shaohua after coming into conflict with the authorities. As Liangshan’s influence expands, the Mount Shaohua outlaws eventually join the larger brotherhood. Zhu Wu’s strategic ability gives him a place within Liangshan’s military planning structure rather than among its foremost individual fighters.
After the imperial amnesty, Zhu Wu accompanies the Liangshan forces through their campaigns. When the wars are over, he does not remain deeply attached to official rank and eventually leaves worldly service with figures such as Fan Rui to pursue a religious life. His place among the 108 heroes rests above all on judgment and strategy.
