Shang Shitu

尚师徒

Shang Shitu is the disciplined pass commander of the Sui–Tang romance tradition. Charged with holding a fortified approach for the Sui side, he enters battle as a complete cavalry officer rather than a wandering champion. His named Tilu Spear, close armor, trained troops, and extraordinary Hulei Leopard mount let him defend the road, pursue broken enemies, and recover control after sudden attacks.

The Hulei Leopard is central to his victories. Its violent cry frightens ordinary horses and throws opposing formations into confusion, allowing Shang Shitu to press with the long spear. Wagang warriors therefore cannot treat him as a single man to be overwhelmed by numbers; they must learn the mount’s weakness, separate horse from rider, and attack the defended pass through planning. Qin Qiong and Cheng Yaojin become major opponents as the rebel army closes around his position.

When the defenses finally collapse and his advantages are stripped away, Shang Shitu refuses to purchase survival by changing allegiance. His end is shaped by duty to a lost command, contrasting with heroes who move easily between rival camps. The furnace-shaped spearhead, leopard-like warhorse, armor marked by pass service, and stone gate behind him create a clear scene of controlled defense. Weapon and mount matter because they serve his final quality: steadfastness at a post he cannot save.
