Guan Ping

Overview

关平是关羽的重要亲属和部将，在《三国演义》中被写作关羽收养的义子，并长期随关羽征战。他年轻勇武、忠诚沉稳，常侍立于关羽身旁，与周仓一起构成关羽最经典的随侍组合。随着关羽形象逐渐神格化，关平也进入民间信仰与庙宇造像体系，常作为关帝身旁捧印、侍立的神将出现，因此成为一个由文学武将进一步进入宗教视觉传统的重要人物。

Guan Ping is a close kinsman and warrior companion of Guan Yu and, in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, is portrayed as Guan Yu’s adopted son who accompanies him through many campaigns. Young, courageous, loyal, and composed, he is frequently shown at Guan Yu’s side and, together with Zhou Cang, forms the most familiar pair of attendants associated with the great general. As Guan Yu was gradually deified as Lord Guan, Guan Ping likewise entered Chinese popular religion and temple iconography. He is commonly depicted standing beside Guan Di and holding his seal, transforming from a literary warrior into an important divine attendant within the religious visual tradition surrounding Guan Yu.
