Imperial Amnesty is the contested process by which the Liangshan outlaws seek recognition, pardon, and service under the Song court in Water Margin. For Song Jiang it offers a route from outlaw brotherhood to loyal public duty; for others it threatens the independence won at Liangshan.
The novel plants the issue before the court’s decree arrives. Song Jiang repeatedly declares his hope for amnesty, while companions argue over what submission will cost. Chapter 82 finally brings the full company under imperial pardon after negotiation, obstruction, and Yan Qing’s access to the emperor.
Amnesty reorganizes the entire brotherhood. Titles, rank, and military purpose now come from the state, and the heroes are sent against other enemies. The subject therefore explains a political transformation rather than a single ceremony: legitimacy is gained, but autonomy and many lives are spent in return.
