Wu Yong, nicknamed the “Resourceful Star,” serves as Liangshan’s chief strategist in Water Margin and is one of the most important minds behind its rise. Originally a village schoolteacher, he is widely read, calculating, and closely associated with Chao Gai and the circle that would eventually form the early Liangshan leadership.
His most famous early scheme is the seizure of the Birthday Gifts. When Yang Zhi is ordered to escort the valuable convoy, Wu Yong devises a plan with Chao Gai, Gongsun Sheng, and the Ruan brothers. At Yellow Mud Ridge, they use drugged wine to incapacitate the guards and carry off the treasure. The robbery brings official pursuit and helps push the conspirators toward Liangshan.
After Chao Gai becomes leader of the stronghold, Wu Yong serves as military adviser and repeatedly devises plans for recruitment, deception, siege warfare, and battlefield operations. He continues in this role after Song Jiang becomes Liangshan’s central leader, becoming one of the principal architects of the brotherhood’s military successes.
After Liangshan accepts imperial amnesty, Wu Yong participates in the subsequent campaigns, including the war against Fang La. When he later learns of Song Jiang’s death, he and Hua Rong go to Song Jiang’s grave and take their own lives there. From the seizure of the Birthday Gifts to Liangshan’s final dissolution, Wu Yong embodies the strategic intelligence behind the entire enterprise.
