Liangshan’s 108 Stars are the collective order that gives the assembled heroes a cosmic and organizational identity in Water Margin. Thirty-six Heavenly Spirits and seventy-two Earthly Fiends turn a crowded fellowship into a remembered structure of names, titles, ranks, and duties.
At the grand assembly, a stone tablet revealed from beneath the earth records the star name and personal name of every member. The company then establishes offices and responsibilities. The episode does more than rank fighters: it presents the completed brotherhood as an order sanctioned by Heaven within the novel.
The 108 should be understood as a whole system rather than a page for one person’s possession. Current associations identify leading figures already present in the Subject Universe; they are representative links, not a reduced claim about who belongs to the full roster.
