杨林是隋唐英雄故事中的重要武将人物，通常被塑造成隋朝宗室重臣和久经沙场的老将，以武艺高强、统兵经验丰富而著称。 在隋末群雄并起的叙事中，杨林长期站在隋朝一方，率军镇压各路反抗势力，与秦琼、程咬金等后来成为瓦岗英雄的人物多次发生冲突。 杨林不仅拥有强悍的个人战斗能力，也经常以大型军阵和军事机关对付群雄。在许多说唐故事中，他设置的铜旗阵等情节成为群雄必须合力破解的重要难关。 随着隋朝局势不断恶化，杨林最终也走向失败。他既是隋朝阵营中最具代表性的老将之一，也是推动瓦岗与各路英雄不断聚合的重要对手。其传统形象具有非常鲜明的甲胄、兵器和老将视觉特征。

Yang Lin is an important military figure in the Sui–Tang heroic tradition, commonly portrayed as a senior member of the Sui ruling house and a veteran commander with great battlefield experience. As rebellion spreads across the empire, Yang Lin remains loyal to the Sui and leads campaigns against the emerging heroic factions. He repeatedly comes into conflict with figures such as Qin Qiong and Cheng Yaojin, who eventually become central members of the anti-Sui martial world. Yang Lin is not defined only by personal combat. In many storytelling traditions he also employs large military formations and elaborate defensive systems, including famous episodes involving the Copper Banner Formation and other challenges that require multiple heroes to overcome. As the Sui regime collapses, Yang Lin ultimately falls with the old order. He remains one of the most recognizable veteran commanders on the imperial side and an important antagonist whose military pressure helps bring the wandering heroes into larger alliances.
